Volunteering

Join the SHHRC team…become a Volunteer!

Volunteers are the heartbeat of SHHRC and are a vital part of the team that makes our program so successful.  As a non-profit organization, SHHRC is always in need of volunteers (must be 14 years of age or older) to help in a variety of ways. In order to work hands on with the horses, volunteers must attend an orientation and training.

Why Should I become an SHHRC Volunteer?

There is a special bond that forms between the volunteers, riders and horses here at SHHRC. Watching the riders grow and knowing that you’ve played a part in their progress is an incredibly rewarding experience.  There is a poem by Jonathan Anthony Davies which conveys the effect interaction with a horse can have upon an individual with a disability.

“I saw a child who couldn’t walk,

Sit on a horse, laugh and talk.

Then ride it through a field of daisies

And yet he could not walk unaided.

I saw a child, no legs below,

Sit on a horse, and make it go

Through woods of green

And places he had never been

To sit and stare

Except from a chair.

I saw a child who could only crawl,

Mount a horse and sit up tall.

Put it through degrees of paces

And laugh at the wonder in our faces.

I saw a child born into strife

Take up and hold the reins of life.”

Many SHHRC volunteers feel that they gain as much from working with our riders as the riders benefit from the help of the volunteers!  Lasting friendships, a sense of pride in helping riders achieve goals, community service hours for high school students…all of these are reasons to become an SHHRC volunteer.  SHHRC volunteers play an extremely important role, and are greatly appreciated by staff, riders and their families alike.  Come join the SHHRC team and make a difference in your life and the lives of others!
